I was recently tapped to help VEGlobal with their public relations efforts and my first job was to write a blog post for the VE Web site. This is what I wrote:
After an orientation week that included a plethora of talks explaining what VEGlobal is all about, new volunteers got a chance to get their hands dirty in the organization—literally and figuratively. On Sept. 6, new and old volunteers alike gathered along with representatives from corporate partner, Business News Americas, to spruce up one of the VE-supported institutions, EntreTodas. Volunteers painted the worn-out white walls vibrant hues of orange and green as the girls who live in the institution flitted around helping to paint, chatting up the volunteers and performing choreographed dance numbers to their favorite songs.
When volunteering your time, it doesn’t always follow that you will see the results of your handiwork. But on this Repair Day, volunteers got to actively serve children in need and see how much their work paid off. Just a little TLC gave a whole new life to the hogar (group home).
At the same time, the girls of the hogar got a chance to be the center of attention of a day totally devoted to them. They were able to break up the monotony of everyday life in a constructive, fun way. And, perhaps most importantly, they had the opportunity to put a little piece of themselves into the institution they call home.
Painting a house can feel kind of superficial when you are doing it for yourself, but painting to brighten the surroundings of children who don’t have much to smile about feels quite the opposite.
